The Lime Wire Beta Filtering System
To address the security issues inherent to open information sharing networks, Lime Wire is launching an experimental Beta Filtering System. Filtering enhances our network as a safe place to share content and information while respecting the concerns of copyright owners. The Filtering System prevents users from downloading, uploading and querying files flagged by copyright owners for filtering.
How It Works
Copyright owners who would like to participate in the Filtering System can start by creating a Copyright Account. Multiple "Agents" may be assigned to a single account to accommodate copyright owners with extensive holdings. Account Agents register files for filtering by providing each file's metadata and description. The most crucial piece of metadata is the file's SHA1 hash, a mathematical summation that uniquely identifies a file and cannot be faked. LimeWire's Filtering System consults our database of files and SHA1 hashes each time a user attempts to download a file. If the file has been blacklisted, LimeWire stops the user from downloading the file.
About the Beta
Lime Wire's Filtering System is in experimental mode. We kindly ask for your patience as we continue to improve our filtering infrastructure. In light of logistical restrictions, Lime Wire cannot guarantee the outcome of a filtering request, but we pledge to make a best effort attempt to meet copyright owner filtering requests. We are working to make the Filtering System as effective and error-proof as possible. Right now, our filtering feature is not comprehensive and many copyrighted files may still be available on the network. Our goal is to eventually filter out all files that copyright owners do not wish to be shared with LimeWire.
How To Participate
To participate in LimeWire's Beta Filtering System, please make sure you meet the following criteria:
- You are the copyright owner for the specified work. LimeWire can only honor filtering requests made by the lawful copyright owner of a work.
- You are sure that you don't want the free promotion. Sharing your content via LimeWire is a free way to distribute your art and gain new fans.
